MBR (Membrane Bio Reactor) treatment combines biological treatment (activated sludge) with separation by membrane filtration.

The main advantages of this process are:

  • a high quality of effluent meeting the most stringent standards and guaranteed by the physical barrier of the membranes;
  • excellent adaptability to load variations;reduced footprint (concentration of activated sludge higher);
  • protection against “leaching” of the biomass.

The membrane processes find advantageous fields of application in the upgrading of existing facilities or in treatments of problematic effluents such as landfill leachates, or when discharge standards are difficult to attain using standard processes.

It is, however, appropriate, to verify the compatibility of the materials used for the manufacture of the membranes with the waste water and the chemical compounds likely to be found within.
